Chapter 10 summary
Technology and education are becoming more and more
relevant. Every University has an online
portal to check grades, student email, and now increasing amounts of online
classes. With this increase of reliance
on technology some people might argue that it causes students to plagiarize or
not think for themselves because the “answers” can be found on the internet. Although there are negative aspects to
educational institutions relying on technology; there are far more positive
attributes. Educational technology enhances the student’s ability
to have a busy work day and still take their classes they need to graduate, allow
students to find more information at a much faster rate, and use the CMC to
enhance group work and quicker communication.
The use of the CMC such as email
allows for students and professors to communicate instantly which can benefit a
student that has a question with homework. One thing that is a negative aspect of technology
in an educational setting is when a student relies on spell check and other
educational tools on the computer.
According to Rothenberg, “There are many grammatical and spelling errors
that software programs do not find, for instance, the difference between “their”
and “there” or “form” and “from” (Rothenberg p.208). If technology continues to advance the way
we are educated then the users will need to realize the internet is open source
and not everything they read is credible.
One way to fix this problem is for educational institutions to require
its students to take information literacy.
Information literacy is the ability to become an effective information
consumer. This means that an information
literacy class will help the student be able to recognize phony materials on
the internet, how to search properly, and know the aspects of plagiarism. So with the internet having the capability to
expand educational opportunities there are many more concerns of cheating. In order to fix the concerns of E-Learning one
must educate students of what to do and not to do.

With
not every student effectively learning the same way and textbooks are becoming
the thing of the past, technology is giving every student the opportunity to
succeed and learn in their own way. Some
students are visual learners while others learn best from text. The use of technology allows for students to have
better visual displays. These new
graphical digital simulations and models aid teachers to touch base with every
student. Sometimes just hearing examples
is not enough so technology allows for teachers to show students exactly what
they are talking about by using these digital simulations. Technology also allows for users to learn
across the world. Glovico.org is online
Global Learning website that allows for students taking a language course to
Skype call a person from the country of the desired language and pays them to
tutor you. This allows for countries
that are in financial need to make money to put food on the table, while
helping the student learn a language.
Through technology world can connect to help each other. Whether it is a student asking a professor a
question about homework via email and getting a prompt response, or students connecting
globally to help each other with foreign language help technology in education
can really change the world and the way we learn for the better.
Chapter 10 Questions:
1.
Have you ever taken an online class, if so did
you like it better than going to a class room?
If not do you think online classes could be the future of education?
2.
Do you think that Information Literacy at St.
Ambrose has helped you be able to use the internet for papers, and homework
more effectively?
Online Reading Questions:
1.
Do you think that global learning can bring
countries together, while boosting their economies?
2.
Do you feel that using digital simulations and
models helps someone understand a concept better? If no why do you feel that way?
Chapter 10
ReplyDelete1. I have taken multiple online classes. Some are good but most are horrible to take online. I prefer in a classroom with an actual teacher teaching instead of teaching myself because i am not the teacher so how am i suppose to know if it is right. When i look at my grades i notice that i did worse without a teacher because i wasn't taught anything. Online classes are useful for some classes but not for major classes we need to take. I need hands on learning. I need to be able to hear it said to me.
2. I do not think Info Lit helped at all. It might have helped other students but for me i have learned this stuff for the past 6 or 7 years of my education. It wasn't anything new it was a review of what i learned in grade school and high school. I do have to say that some things did help explain on the proper way to write a bibliography but i think some people do not need to take info lit.

1. I believe that global learning would help bring countries together because we would be learning about their culture and they would learn about ours. I think we would of a better understanding of what they are like and how their lives work. For economics I do think it would be a easier more mutual agreement on coming together and working together.
2. I do believe that using a sort of visual aid does help people understand a certain concept because when we see it it is more likely kept in our memory compared to just words on paper. I am a visual learner so visuals like models are a lot easier to understand concepts and information.
Chapter 10
ReplyDelete1. I have not taken an online class before. I would much rather go to the classroom and see the teacher face to face. It would be hard for me to sit in my living room or somewhere and listen to a lecture through a computer screen. It is not as personal and I do not think I would learn as much or as easily. With that being said, I do think that eventually classes will be more online in the future. I do not like the idea that thats what will happen, but I think it will.
2. I think that InfoLit did help me in some ways to better use the library and its resources for papers and other homework. They did not teach me anything new that I hadn't already heard in high school, but I still think it is a good idea to have students take it...Even if it does seem like a waste of time.

1. Yes, I do think global learning can help bring the world together. I think this would be very useful for foriegn language. I have a friend from Puerto Rico and another who lives in Mexico and any time I am having trouble with my spanish homework they are very helpful in explaining different things that the teacher might not do as well. I think it is a great way for people in other countries to make some extra money too. The world that we live in today is not as good as it could be and global learning is a small way to help make it better.
2. I do believe that digital learning stimulations is a big help for people trying to learn things. I learn much better when I can see how something is done or what the teacher is talking about, rather than them just explaining it. Sometimes it can be hard to read out of a book and try to learn a concept, but when you can visually see it and how it works, that is a huge advantage.
Chapter 10 Questions:
ReplyDelete1. I have taken whole semesters of online classes. These were classes at major universities as well so it was the same class as normal just online. I absolutely would prefer to do online classes over traditional lecture classes. I have actually done better in the semesters that I did purely online than when I attended traditional class. Personally I am a better teacher to myself than others are to me. Id rather figure things out on my own and at my own pace which online classes allow me to. I dont think online classes would be the end of traditional school, nor is it the complete future, but I do believe it is shaping up to be a big part of being successful in the future.
2. Negative. Info Lit was a complete waste of time in my opinion. Most high schools teach the same content as well as English 101 and 102. We also write so many essays and papers at Ambrose that you should know how to write.
Online Reading Questions:
1. I do believe that global learning is mutually beneficial for all involved. It can boost all economies involved through the learning process. It allows people to make money while learning which will ultimately increase money making ability.
2. Yes I do. It does not replace the real thing but it is closer to the real thing than nothing. It also allows for a student to learn and work in environments or through situations that may not be possible to replicate in real life, such as a stressed situation or disaster.
Chapter 10
ReplyDelete1. I took a math class that was online and we met once a month for a test that was also on the computer, because they wanted to make sure we were not cheating. I did not like it better than going to a classroom because I am a social and interactive learner. Therefore having to try to learn and do things by myself with the computer program as the teacher was really hard for me. I also did not like how the teacher was more disconnected than compared to offline classes. I feel like I get what I pay for when I take an offline class and not an online class. When I paid to take an online class I always made the comment that I can’t believe I was paying for this. I think that for some people online classes are helpful, but for someone like me I can’t stand them because I can’t learn in that disconnected way.
2. I did not think information literacy did anything for me personally. I was a transfer from a much larger state school and in my English 101 class they had a reference librarian show us how to use Ebsco and all of those databases and it was very helpful. However my information literacy class here barely touched on that and I felt it was a waste of time. People in my generation have been using the internet for sources since before high school, and therefore making college students take this class to learn if a website is safe, credible, or how to site a source is rather worthless. Most students already know and have been using online sources for many years now. Especially with websites that generate sources for you, and other helpful tools on the internet, that eliminate the need for learning how to site a book versus and website. I don’t think information literacy is needed as a class here.

1. Yes, I think the idea of global learning communities is the most beneficial way of learning a different language especially. The best way of learning a language is through a native speaker, and through global learning I think both sides benefit. However I also think that the other sites will dominate over tools like the global learning communities. When I learn French I often connect through a site that lets a person who is practicing English talk to me while I practice my French on them on a native speaker. Together we benefit from it and neither of us have to pay anything. Therefore, I can’t see many people would be willing to pay money for a language tutor, mentor, teacher in that way when there are free options. The only thing that might really boost it is if the colleges or high schools pay for the services of the abroad teachers and tutors, then I think it would really gain popularity, which would be great since it helps both sides.
2. Yes, I think that they help every kind of learner, not just visual learners. I think that when people are able to show an interactive and more accurate portrayal of what they are teaching then everyone benefits from it. Simulations and models can aid presentations, making them more interesting and clear, yet also help people learn the material and have a better understanding of it. I think that simulations can aid understanding in really neat ways. In one of my classes we had a simulation of what a day is like for someone with schizophrenia. The simulation was truly a simulation in that fact that we were inside their head and were seeing what they were seeing. Having an example like this makes it easier to understand than having an hour lecture describing what it is like. In those ways visual representations are very helpful in academic settings.
1. I would think that online classes is one of the up and coming things that will become bigger. Just like a conversation we had on class on Monday, being able to just stay home and do your studies will be so much better than the traditional form of schooling. You are able to spend less recourses on getting to school and it would be cheaper for the students due to less fees from the university. Also you get to stay in your comfort zone.
ReplyDelete2. It did not help me at all. I have a great knowledge of online recourses and know how to write papers, and if I didn’t I would use the internet to find out how to do them. On the other hand, some people are not a fortunate as I am and don’t know as much as I would to use the library and write papers.
1. I say it would be a good way to help people with learning. I find that one on one learning is the more efficient way to learn. It could potentially build relation with other countries and break stereotypes that plague the desire to want to build a relationship.
2. Being shown how to do a problem is one way to do it and if you have someone telling you and answering your questions. I have found that if I look at a power point I will be able to learn the information better than if I read it from a book.
1. I have taken online classes, and I prefer online courses over being in the classroom. The one thing I found as an online student is that you really have to have self-drive/motivation in order to stay on schedule. For me personally I think it is a great option, however there are some courses that just simply cannot be taught online because they require hand on, such as Ceramics or 3D design. Online classes defiantly should be integrated into traditional ways of teaching, however I don’t believe education could be just online, because there would be too many restrictions for some course, but I think online is defiantly a great option.
ReplyDelete2. I was not required to take Information Literacy at St. Ambrose or at the community college I attended. I do believe though that the internet has had an impact on the assignments I have done, because it is through the internet that we retrieve most information from.

1.I do believe that global learning could have a great impact bringing individuals together from other countries, to learn different languages, this adds to our value as humans because we are worth more to a company if we can speak multiple languages. This could boost their economy because they get paid to be tutor and we could teach them the tools that will allow them to gain the necessary skills to be a more productive economy, this could have negative implications as well though because individuals could be misunderstood.
2. I do believe that digital simulations and models can help people understand a concept better. I believe this to be true because the military uses simulations and models to train soldiers before they are deployed into real life situations. Digital simulations and models can help teachers explain concepts so the students understand the concepts better. The modeling tools allow students to manipulate objects in ways that may otherwise have been impossible.
Chapter 10:
ReplyDelete1. I have taken an online class before but personally did not like it as much as being in a classroom. I felt that the function of my online class was for the sole purpose of earning credits towards my degree, whereas when I am in a physical classroom I feel that the main objective is to participate in a deeper understanding of a subject and really come out of it having learned something. There is much more homework to do in online classes to make up for the time not spent in the classroom, so instead of actually learning the material I skimmed through and found only the answers I needed to get a passing grade.
2. I thought that the information literacy class gave me good tips as to how to use resources other than the internet to find information, however instead of spending time in a classroom I think that it would be more beneficial to the students to be distributed this knowledge in emails or handouts in class rather than wasting the time on a class. I have since not used any of the methods taught in the class and am still well on my way to graduation.
Online:
1. I absolutely think that it would be beneficial to other countries to use programs such as the Skype tutor program to make money. The process of globalization in businesses is growing in demand and for people in the US to learn the languages of other countries where they are expanding business would be very beneficial. I think that there would be a lot of companies let alone individuals that would rather have hands on tutoring from a person speaking in their native language, then to try and teach themselves a new language from a book or learning program.
2. The idea of digital simulations and models is interesting because I think it brings a mix of visual aid which helps many people as well as direct learning information. To see someone walk through the steps of a process that they may have already taught or explained just further deepens the understanding of the subject matter, especially in online learning situations where you may just be reading text and have no extra demonstrations available that a classroom supports.
Chapter 10:
ReplyDelete1. I have taken an online class and would say that I do prefer it over a class on campus but for me it has major disadvantages. The problem with online classes for me is I just focused on the content for the questions rather than the whole chapter. Since there was no instructor, this information never came up and I missed the content entirely. Doing this, I felt that I missed a lot of the class is suppose to be about. I would not take an online class for any classes that were in my major. Online classes do have their advantages such as doing assignments when there is free time available. It seemed the teacher provided a lot more online tools for our class to use than any class at the university. Each chapter we covered had online help with exercises, flashcards and practice quizzes.
2. When I transferred the information literacy class was waived so I did not have to take it. In high school in english classes we had to learn about the resources the library provides us. Today, I do not use any of these tools so I would say it does not help me. For my homework and assignments I use wikipedia with the resources at the bottom. A lot of these resources are legitimate articles with proper citations giving them credibility.

1. I do believe global learning would be a good way to bring countries together. Each country has their own way of teaching and language. By bringing countries together it would allow people to learn about others in a more face to face interactions rather than reading from books. This can be done through teleconferencing with the video and voice enhancing the interaction between people.
2. I do believe that digital learning simulations can help the people using it to better understand the concept. This type of process I believe will help every kind of learner since some people might be a visual learner where seeing how to solve a problem might be better than reading how to solve a problem. Simulations are a great way to better understand the material since there is immediate feedback of the actions taken. This is the best way to learn the material other than real on-hands experience.
